Retire to Italy

About Living in Italy

There’s a moment that keeps happening in our house.

Moving to Italy is one of the most exciting decisions you’ll ever make. But finding the right town? That’s where it gets overwhelming.

We’ll be sitting on the couch in Australia, watching yet another YouTube video of a stone farmhouse tucked into a hillside somewhere in Italy. One of us will say, “That’s it – that’s the one. Pull out the cheque book!” The other will disagree. We’ll debate kitchens, views, village size, proximity to the coast… and then suddenly stop and laugh.

Because we’re not there yet.

But we will be.

Why we started this

Like many people dreaming of a move to Italy, we began the same way you probably have – scrolling endlessly through property listings on sites like idealista.it, imagining a different pace of life.

At first, it feels simple:

  • Find a house
  • Check the price
  • Picture your life there

But then comes the hard part.

Where in Italy do you actually want to live?

A small village in Tuscany? A coastal town in Puglia? Somewhere in the north near the lakes? A quiet hilltop in Umbria?

That single question slowed everything down for us.

And that’s exactly why this site exists.

What Living in Italy is

Living in Italy is not a travel blog. It’s not just inspiration. It’s a practical tool designed to help answer one of the biggest questions you’ll face:

“Which town is right for me?”

To solve that, we’ve built this site of more than 7,800 towns across Italy, organised by:

  • Geographic regions
  • Regions
  • Provinces

Each town brings together the kind of information people are already searching for — the details that actually influence your decision.

How to use this site

You can explore Italy in a way that mirrors how decisions are really made.

Start broadly by browsing regions and get a feel for different parts of the country. From there, narrow down into provinces, and eventually into individual towns.

When you land on a town page, you’ll find key insights that help you picture daily life – not just what it looks like, but what it feels like to live there.

If you’re comparing options (and you probably will be), you can use the town comparison tools to weigh up different places side-by-side — something we found ourselves constantly wishing for.

Built from our own experience

Everything here comes from the same place – the hours (and years) we’ve spent trying to answer this question ourselves.

The late nights comparing towns.

The spreadsheets.

The “this is definitely the one” moments… followed by second thoughts the next day.

We realised that finding the right place isn’t just about data, and it’s not just about emotion – it’s somewhere in between.

So this site is designed to support both.

Where we’re headed

Our plan is simple: within the next 2–3 years, we’ll be making the move from Australia to Italy.

This site is part of that journey.

As we get closer, it will continue to evolve – with better tools, and clearer ways to help you narrow down your own decision.

If you’re on the same path

If you’ve ever found yourself:

  • Watching property tours late at night
  • Saving towns you can’t quite pronounce
  • Debating lifestyle choices for a life you haven’t started yet

Then you’re in exactly the right place.

Because that’s where we are too.

And if this site helps you get even a little closer to finding your perfect town in Italy — then it’s doing exactly what it was built to do.
